Garstang Poetry Appreciation Group met at the town’s Arts Centre today for its monthly meeting.
The focus was on two American poets, Raymond Carver and Charles Bukowski whose tough, gritty poems were read and commented on by session leader Harry Batty.
Several members of the group also brought along and read poems by Carver and Bukowski.
Prior to the formal start of the meeting a short silence was held to honour the memory of Professor James Dodding who was instrumental in the formation of the group.
There was also a montage of photos on exhibit in the arts centre’s music room depicting aspects of the life and career of Prof Dodding who worked as a theatre director and drama tutor on both sides of the Atlantic.
Following the meeting several members who are involved in plans for a forthcoming anthology of poems written by group members met for a discussion led by Graciela Lemos.
Next month’s meeting, at 2pm on May 25, will be led by Marie Whalley who will present and discuss a selection of poems on the topic “Older People.” For more information contact Marie on 01995 603605.
